it is undetermined if this is a true event or not.
however, even though he has some extra weight on him, he is quite muscular as well, thanks to his warrior apprentice days. add that to his long ginger fur, and you get a huge medicine cat. he might look a bit intimidating with those dark copper eyes, but rest assured. he'd rather allow kits to sit on him, rather than vice versa.
in addition, his fur gets into so many knots, yew honestly forgets to groom himself after a while. therefore, the guy gets pretty filthy after a week, and yet, he has learned to not take it to heart. the tom didn't get to work his tail off to get treated like a slob, though his neatness otherwise says a large controversy. amazing.

when one thinks of a large, intimidatingly large, tom, they would either suspect a gentle giant or a complete dickwad of a cat.
yewberry is both of those in his own way.
starting with gentle giant, he's the type of cat who will go out of his way to put in the effort of helping another out. his passionate love for the clan as a whole is, without a doubt, his most redeeming quality. he gives, expects nothing in return, and quite a calm boy. at least, most of the time. sometimes his temper runs short, especially with his former mentor, and he will apologize directly afterward if it isn't firfur.
yeah, we gotta have that one exception.
however, he's a cynic. he believes some cats only work for themselves and no one else, which he admits to being before turning into the tom he is today. he has his doubts, to other clans, to some of his own clanmates, and he seems to hate this portion about him.
there's also that clumsiness and lumbering around, with that large body of his, and he gets absolutely filthy after a while. don't be fooled, though; his stocks are absolutely clean and probably the cleanest of all the clans.
issue is, the guy's blunt, straight to the point, and lacks humor. something you wouldn't expect from a guy with a pun-filled name.
yeah, blame firfur for that one.
» background: in a time where starclan existed, not a single riverclan cat believed their high positions would change so dramatically in a span of ten moons.
starting with the mother, stoatfur, and father, pearclaw, the two warriors were firm mates for several moons before their first and only litter in the greenleaf after they got hitched. when stoatfur announced her pregnancy to the clan, she seemed to be absolutely delighted, along with her ginger mate. she took to the nursery instantly, not willing to take the chance of remaining a warrior for another moon.
the birthing was simple and easily guided by the medicine cat, firfur, and the queen gave birth to two ginger toms: yewkit and yarrowkit. it honestly brought the parents closer than ever before, and as the two doted on their little boys, firfur seemed to be thinking of something that never would be said. at least, not until later on.
the two toms would grow up close, never seeming to leave the other a foxlength away from them. yarrowkit seemed to be the smaller and more scrawny of the two, while yewkit was a large boy, and he didn't take into mind of his appetite that young, either. it would turn out that both were setting sail to become warriors, even though another cat had different thoughts.
yewpaw and yarrowpaw were on the road to warriors, and the larger tom was certainly the stronger of the two. mentored by a burly grey stoneclaw, the fluffy ginger apprentice took in only the best training from the senior warrior. truly, this was the path he was going to live: a warrior, maybe become deputy someday, maybe become yewstar...
he kept that fantasy alive well into his twelfth moon, where he was put to the test in his warrior's assessment, passing with astonishing colors. in a few days time, he would be a warrior, and so would his brother! his hopes were high, his attitude screaming self-confidence- that is.
until fernstar told him he wasn't getting his warrior name.
"why not?" he asked, and she explained to him about how firfur came to her directly, whispering about finding yew berries in his den which, as most cats knew, were poisonous. while he originally took it as a terrible omen of impending doom for himself, the leader explained it meant he was supposed to become the medicine cat apprentice. something that, quite literally, broke his spirit. he would rather take the deadly omen than become an apprentice to the old bag of bones.
of course, yewpaw had absolutely no choice in the matter but to go along with it. while his brother gained the name of yarrowfang, the large tom was still stuck with his apprentice name, and an overenthusiastic firfur was going off about how he was the best at convincing fernstar to go along with him-
to which he figured out all the ratty old tom wanted was a chance at giving a pun for a name.
joy.
the next four moons were spent with yewpaw shirking his duties as a medicine cat's apprentice, further delaying the inevitable full name. however, the old coot was running out of moons to continue serving as the riverclan medicine cat, and he gave the full name at eighteen moons- only six moons of training, rather than the usual eight to ten.
yewberry. he was named yewberry. the thing that could kill any cat was now the medicine cat assistant.
yeah, safe to say he wasn't thrilled.
it would be around his twenty-seventh moon did firfur retire, and the ginger tom stepped up as the newest full medicine cat. once the old man was out of the picture, yewberry started to gain a small passion for the work, going as far as supporting the newly announced thorntooth as deputy when the time arrived, and after treating two greencough bouts, he seemed ready for whatever.
yet, he never expected the utter disappearance of starclan, and he was unaware of the battle of fourtrees danger looming ahead of him.
it would be that battle where both of his darling parents passed away in the fray, leaving the ginger tom bitter to the core over their deaths. everything could have been avoided if thunderclan didn't shoot lies and slander at riverclan's new leader, thornstar. who cared if he was a half-clan cat? it certainly didn't to the medicine cat.
after the abolishment of gatherings did young cherrypaw- cherrykit at the time- march up to him and demanded he take her on as an apprentice. while he continued to ask if she was certain, at least until the days before their apprentice ceremony, she was determined to become a medicine cat. and thus, he allowed it.
and that's where he stands to this day. a mentor to a young molly, a supporter of thornstar, and a hopeful soul for starclan to return.[/ul]
