WINDCLAN DEPUTY AUDITIONS

This is a call to all members interested in applying for the position of WindClan's second-in-command, Palestar's right-paw, the deputy! In order to apply, simply reply to this thread with a completed character application and a roleplay sample. Auditions will end after a minimum of one week has passed and at least three entries have been made for the position.

THINGS TO KNOW:

• The previous deputy was killed eight moons ago in the battle of Fourtrees, at which point the next deputy was named. As such, your deputy must be at least 34 moons of age.
• Palestar lost her last life about six moons ago, at which point she announced that she still received guidance from StarClan between lives and began convincing her Clan to trust in her insight in the absence of guidance from their ancestors.
• The deputy must have trained at least one apprentice at the time they were named as Clan deputy. This is simply a requirement of the Warrior Code.
• The deputy is one of Palestar's closest confidants. She rarely leaves her den except to make important Clan announcements or make the occasional visit to the various cats in camp, and takes all of her meals in the privacy of her den as well. This means all of the day-to-day supervision of the Clan is done by the deputy, who then comes to Palestar to keep her abreast of current events.

Feel free to take a look at the unclaimed kin list and make your deputy a relative of an existing character. This is not mandatory, simply an opportunity to take advantage of existing character relationships in order to make your character more complex!

[/b] Like a lofty giant, Sootpatch towers over the cats below. Her fierce gaze of fossilized amber could turn the plentiful fields to stone like Medusa’s gaze. Her steps claim a practice power, though one she proclaims is not as good as Palestar. Her maw demands respect, words wielding the power she possess in her post. While many in Windclan maintain their slim figures with short coats, Sootpatch is suited for the cold. Her thick undercoat lets her stand long nights in leaf-bare while the others shiver in the dens. During harsh sun of Greenleaf, her short overcoat lets her bound weightlessly under the summer moons. No matter the weather, though, no hare may outrace her outstretched claws that are ready to make them return home a meal. Boasting her prime, the myriad of beige, lighter and darker browns and thick cream splotches let her show her beauty yet remain consistent with her stalking. Sootpatch goes on to gloat her perfect coloring allows her to remain unseen in the dry tall grasses which she stalks.

Named after the smudges of coal leftover from the two-leg’s camp fire, she holds every bit of scorn from the fire it once was. While her visage holds no claim for flame, her spite rages over the Moore. Her heat scares those of weak-will. Sootpatch has it so hard set in her mind that a clan filled with the weak cannot succeed. It might even have been by Palestar’s connection to Starclan alone that they have survived the break of contact. Her burning remarks can make even the most confidant tom think he’s done murder for the simplest mistake. If a hunter does not catch prey for a clan, who will feed it? If the guards do not stay vigilante, who says that another clan does not swoop in to end them all?

Yet her brushfire will only touch those who come against her. Sootpatch will use her searing ferocity to safe-guard those she deems worthy. The one she deems in Palestar. The comet sent down by Starclan. It is with this tunnel vision that Sootpatch scorns all who oppose. Palestar knows what to do to protect her clan, and Sootpatch was honored to be picked to be the right hand that would carry out her word. Yet she holds a stone in her belly. The stone is rough and stabbing, a deep-seated jealousy over her clan, and even her leader. She thinks it unfounded, but she cannot help but feel it.


» background: One could say Sootpatch was raised rather well. Her father was a great warrior, senior at the time. Her mother wasn’t the nicest but she wasn’t the harshest. The two taught their kits well. Amongst a litter of four, she was surrounded by her brothers and their antics. Charredkit was especially the worst, with Dirtkit coming as a close second. Her brother Crowkit was like-minded to her so she stuck to him the most. While their parents weren’t looking, Charredkit and Dirtkit would always play some horrible prank on the other kits, apprentices, and sometimes the odd elder. Sootkit made sure to rat on them every time. Charredkit and Dirtkit were always caught by her, and she sat smugly by her mother each time she scolded them and punished them.

Growing into apprentices, each was named a –paw. Charredpaw, Dirtpaw and Crowpaw were given to warriors she can barely remember now. She remembers her mentor well though. She was given to her mother. Sootpaw often trained with her brothers and soon she knew each of their moves well enough to move with them like a fury. They didn’t fight hard enough though. On a group patrol with her mother, Charredpaw and his mentor, Charredpaw snuck off like the group wasn’t watching. Charredpaw had gone off to investigate the farm he always saw over the horizon. When they found him it was too late. Charredpaw had been found by the twolegs. They could not reach him as the twoleg took him into the house.

Sootpaw blamed herself. She did not keep a good eye on her brother, she’d had of watched Charredpaw like she used to he wouldn’t’ve wander. The next tragedy came after they were named warriors. Sootpaw grew to Sootpatch after she trained ferociously with her mother, not wishing to lose another brother, and trained her own apprentice in such a way too. Dirtpaw fought to Dirtclaw, harder than he was before with his closest friend gone, also with an apprentice of his own. Crowpaw stepped into Halfstride, after an accident moved him to the elder’s den when his back leg was crushed under a cow’s heavy hoof. He tried to swear he saw his brother in the window. Yet it was Halfstride’s accident that saved him.

Sootpatch lost her brother Dirtclaw and mother and mentor Quail-leap at the last Gathering, making her heart grow hard. This is also were the seeds of jealousy sank to her stomach, where the stone emerged to which she’d never acknowledge. Her only untouched family was Slatetail, who moved to the elder’s den with her brother after the last Gathering.

She was honored to be appointed the new deputy of Windclan. It was that day Sootpatch swore she’d do all she could to protect what she had left.

[/font][/b] Breezefang is a bit of an odd creature - altogether longer, spindlier, and just plain odd compared to the typical cat. She isn't alone in this, of course - her appearance is, on the whole, much like her brother's, besides their differing pelts. However, there is one major difference between the two as far as build goes - while her brother's thin, long legs translate into a tall frame, her own frame is not quite so tall, instead a bit on the small side compared to the average warrior (though somewhat typical for a WindClanner). Her long, thin build and her slightly smaller size, together, translate to a cat built almost entirely for speed - but contrary to how she may appear, Breezefang is a very agile fighter, too, perhaps in part because of this speed, but also because of the power she holds behind her strikes, inherited from her father. Her body, though long and lean, and even a little small, is well-muscled, and what she lacks in size or stockiness, she makes up for in agility.

Her fur, short and sleek, is at its base the same inky black of her littermate's - but dappled with a pale, pale ginger, mottling her pelt in a distinct tortoiseshell pattern. Her eyes, though for the most part average sized, appear large on her small and angled head; their amber color is quite vivid, but nowhere near that of her brother's vibrant orange-amber color. Instead, Breezefang's are a more subtle golden-amber hue. But in spite of the differing eye shades, Breezefang, at the very least, shares one big thing with her brother - she has the same, lanky build as he does, though on a slightly smaller scale; her frame, small as it is, is almost all legs, with powerful muscles, and her whole body is long and thin, with a tail that tapers to a fine point. Even her ears are odd compared to other cats, coming to rest just a bit lower than one might expect them to. Overall, her odd appearance gives her an almost exotic look - and despite how out of place she can seem, she is not without her charms, with a sleek and shiny pelt and a face that some might still consider beautiful despite its quirks. This, coupled with her slender and graceful frame, might cause some cats to consider her as 'pretty' - something that would likely irk Breezefang to no end.

If Breezefang is one thing above all else, it is driven. Everything that she does - and everything that she has done, even as far back as her youth - has and has had a purpose, one singular motivation behind everything: to be better, and thus to better the Clan. Even from kithood, she has always been more grounded and down to earth than most cats, at least when it comes to her aspirations and her thoughts - and especially more so than her head-in-the-clouds brother. As such, she puts forth a lot of effort into her duties, and likely was the type to have held many a friendly rivalry as an apprentice, all in the name of bettering her skills. When coupled with the fact that she has quite the courageous streak, this meant she was also the kind of cat, at least in her apprentice days, to have entertained many various dares; while her bravery isn't exactly fearlessness, if Breezefang believes she can reasonably succeed in doing something, and that it will either improve or simply prove her skills, she will likely do it without hesitation. For this reason, she was the type of apprentice who would have jumped the gorge if she was dared to (provided she was dared to do so at a narrow enough portion) - and, depending on who you ask, might have been the apprentice who did.

Either way, this daringness, along with her tendency towards friendly rivalries and her generally friendly nature, would have likely made her a very popular apprentice growing up, and perhaps still even a well-liked warrior - and she is well-aware of this. When she isn't trying to better herself or otherwise focused on the Clan, Breezefang can be a rather amiable cat, simply because she sees no good in not making friends among the Clan. After all, it is the Clan to which she has devoted her life - so why not make some friends along the way? Still, it seems as if Breezefang might hold these friends at paw's length, per se - while she makes friends easily, she does not truly create strong bonds easily at all. In short, though she is the type to make many friends and impress others, she is not the type to actually become close to anyone very easily. And considering how she does take her duties seriously, it's likely she wouldn't ever have the time, at least in her own eyes, to go about trying to create these close bonds. As far as Breezefang is concerned, she doesn't need them - the Clan's wellbeing, and her own skills, are more important than wishy-washy things like romance or close friendships.

That said, when Breezefang does have someone she is close to, she is very protective over them, even if it's not always apparent. As of now, there is only one cat this applies to - her brother, Swiftwing, who she has attempted to keep in line since kithood in spite of his odd and absent-minded nature. If any cat were to threaten a cat she loved, she would not hesitate to rush to their defense - perhaps with claws and teeth if necessary. She is not the kind of cat to sit idly by and watch her loved ones be hurt or harassed.

Though it's possible that one might not believe she loved her brother, at first. She doesn't always show it - as she's not the type to show a lot of affection, at least not in that way. It can sometimes seem like she is annoyed by his presence, if one didn't know what they were looking at - after all, she is not at all averse to giving him a firm cuff around the ears when he strays out of line, or a stern talking to (were he to listen.) However, these actions are because she cares for him - truly, if Breezefang didn't care for him, she wouldn't bother with him at all. This is also how it is with anyone else - if she doesn't care for you at all, she is likely to simply ignore you. As it is, she does care, at least slightly, for all the cats in her Clan, even if she doesn't ever allow herself to become particularly close with them. If there were to be a cat she did not like, she would simply not interact with them at all - because why trifle with those who don't matter? When compared to more important things, it's only logical that she should simply push aside completely those who she tends to look at with disdain. She has much more significant things to worry about, after all.

Breezefang is also, at her core, a proud and obstinate cat, one who is not willing to waver when it comes to things she firmly believes. A wound to her pride would also cause her to be quick to hold a grudge, though she is, as aforementioned, not the type to outwardly express this other than by ignoring someone. Her stubborn nature might also be why she is so patiently willing to deal with her brother - if she were to give up, she would be admitting defeat. And if there is one thing Breezefang is unwilling to accept - it's defeat. Though, in spite of this and her previously outlined bravery, she is not entirely without fear - and, though it may be grudging and with great pain, she knows when to back down when necessary, though she will usually try and push past any fear or trepidation she feels. As a general rule, when she is the only one at stake, she is too stubborn to ever back down - but when other cats hang in the balance, she is a lot more likely to realize when a situation cannot be won and admit defeat if it means their safety.

There is one major thing which causes her great annoyance - and that is when other cats seem hung up over her appearance. On the whole, Breezefang is definitely an odd sight - whether others see her as beautiful or ugly, it doesn't matter - but she is loath to recognize this, not because she cares at all what others think of her, but because she doesn't. It isn't often that she does care about the opinions of others (though, like any cat, even she can be hurt by them from time to time) - but she can tend to get miffed when she notices - or thinks she notices, at the very least - cats spending any more time than what she deems necessary looking over her appearance. In her to-the-point mind, silly things such as 'ugliness' or 'beauty' shouldn't matter, and the fact that she was born with an appearance perhaps slightly more likely to turn heads, either for better or for worse, is a great pain to her. Breezefang's top priority is the Clan and her own duties - so the thought that any cat would spend more than a heartbeat on someone else's appearance, even just to note that it was 'odd', when they could be dedicating that time to furthering the Clan instead, makes her sick.

» background: Breezekit was born to a larger litter in greenleaf, to parents Blackwind and Eaglestep - but the labor was hard, and as a result, only she and her brother Swiftkit survived. Named in the hopes that they could have easy lives, Breezekit and Swiftkit grew into their names fast, chasing each other around and playing even more so than most kits, it seemed - much to the chagrin of their mother and the other queens. For Breezekit, playing was already the first step towards her near-obsession with bettering her warrior skills - with games that, in their own, innocent ways, already mirrored the things she and her brother would one day have to learn. Even in playing rabbit and chasing each other around, Breezekit knew she was getting stronger and faster, and she relished in it.

While her brother was the type to often ask strange and out-there questions, Breezekit was always to the point - even at her young age, she wanted to know what was important: what she would be doing as an apprentice, how long until she got her mentor, and the like. She already had decided what she was going to do as she got older - focus on the Clan and on becoming stronger and faster than she already was. It became a 'running theme' of sorts for the newly-named Breezepaw, and even bordered on obsession.

As an apprentice, she wasn't quite the loner or outcast her brother was - instead, she made many a friendly rivalry among her fellow apprentices, and often played a part in the many dares and games they would play. But for Breezepaw, these were never without a purpose - and if a dare was proposed that she felt wouldn't help her in any way, she was not afraid at all to turn it down. Still, for the most part, she participated in their antics, whether whole-heartedly or not, and as a result of this and in her growing ability in combat, she was likely to have been seen by many as the 'cool' apprentice, and the one to whom you could take any dare or a challenge for a spar. But no matter how willing she was to entertain the antics of the other apprentices, one thing was still most important for her - her training, as without it she could not improve, nor could she one day serve her Clan as well as she needed to.

Training wise, she was a promising young cat - but she never excelled in hunting so much as her brother had; Swiftpaw was a naturally excellent hunter, it seemed, while she could only hope to be simply average at it, no matter how much she tried to excel as he had. Still, she made up for an average hunting ability with her extremely agile and formidable fighting techniques, and she soon earned her warrior name because of this - Breezefang, with her brother being named Swiftwing for his speed and hunting prowess.

Though the siblings were proud to have been made warriors, their happiness was soon after soured by Silverflight and Harestar's deaths - the former of which had been Breezefang's mentor. Still, the two pushed on, Breezefang even mentoring her own apprentice, Nightpaw, later Nightheart.

And then the silence came.

The battle of Fourtrees brought with it loss not only for all the Clans but also specifically for Breezefang and Swiftwing. Breezefang's apprentice at the time, a young and lean tom by the name of Featherpaw, was killed in the battle - as was Breezefang and Swiftwing's father, Eaglestep. Breezefang was deeply saddened, but she tried to stay strong for her mother, who had retired to the elder's den in her grief - and for the Clan, as in the wake of the battle and the death of the deputy, she had been named the new deputy of WindClan. As such, it was not just her mother or her littermate that she had to support - she had the whole Clan to look after, and Breezefang was determined to do so as well as she possibly could.

Their mother soon passed on. Again, they mourned; Swiftwing became altogether even more distant, whereas Breezefang took this final loss as her cue to grab on even tighter to the world, and to her brother. As Palestar became the Clan's supposed prophet, both siblings turned to her for guidance with the rest of the Clan - but Breezefang never so much as her littermate, who seemed to treat Palestar as some enlightened being. Breezefang saw Palestar not as some goddess as others might have, but simply as their leader - and having never had a huge amount of faith in StarClan anyway (at least, not any more so than the typical warrior - perhaps even a little bit less), she was simply glad to have someone to lead them through a time which seemed to trouble many - but not ready to start seeing said cat as some sort of goddess. As her deputy, she would trust and respect her - but never see her as some superior being. Her own pride, if nothing else, would never allow that. Even still, Breezefang's top priority had been and would always remain the Clan, and she would continue to do all that she could to serve it, and to better it and herself, no matter what it might take.
