Toadwhisker is a bouncy little fluffball, small and full of energy. She can easily be mistaken for an apprentice at a distance, simply because of her diminutive size combined with the youthful spring in her step. Though she is quite small for a full grown queen, Toadwhisker is a veritable whirlwhind of fluffy limbs and curiously twitching whiskers, all centered around a pair of wide green eyes. She always seems to have somewhere to be and something to say, and can hardly spare a moment to sit quietly even for the Clan leader, though of course if Thornstar has something to say then she will make an effort. Most of Toadwhisker's visible bulk is contributed to by a generous helping of fur, a long pelt of dark brown and black mixed through with ginger. Her fur is thick and soft, but it takes ages to dry properly, and besides which she's always said she looks an utter mess when she's wet. For both of those reasons Toadwhisker prefers to avoid taking swims any more often than she must. She certainly makes quite the picture when she's dry, with a build that seems as though a much larger, fluffier cat was simply squashed into a smaller and stubbier one, but all of the fur remained and now deigns to puff out in all directions. Toadwhisker takes care to groom her luxurious coat thoroughly every day, but she is a busy cat with much to do and little time to attend to her appearance, so her long fur becomes untidy rather quickly.

Any cat with as many things to keep track of as Toadwhisker is bound to forget a thought or two on occasion. This is what she says, anyway, though the reality is that Toadwhisker forgets half of what she sets out to say or do, mainly because she tries to take care of so much all at once. It's simply so hard for her to be patient or to say no, so she puts too much on her plate and inevitably things begin to tumble off the edges. She's nosy, always sticking her paws into other cats' business, and once she does, Toadwhisker inevitably has something to say about whatever she's found. Never one to keep silent about her thoughts, Toadwhisker is known for barging into private conversations and giving unasked for advice on her Clan-mates' problems. Of course this habit doesn't help her organizational issues, as whatever else she was doing tends to get left by the wayside as soon as Toadwhisker spies any cat looking like they could be suffering from an issue they're just too hesitant to share. Like a brooding hen, Toadwhisker will swoop down on any cat in need of aid, whether she's wanted or not, and offer her assistance either until the problem goes away or until she is satisfied that her victim will check in with her later with an update. Toadwhisker can be surprisingly stubborn when a situation warrants her full attention. Her tendency to fuss until everything is perfect comes to light especially clearly when she isn't distracted by anything else, in which case it can be an absolute nightmare trying to get her to leave well enough alone. She's just trying her best, though, and really that's all any cat could ask for.
» background : Toadkit was born at the very end of greenleaf, as a chill wind had begun to rattle the branches of trees and drain the green from the foliage. She was the last kit of three, born after her two brothers, Sandkit and Duck-kit. Though the warm seasons were coming to a close, it was a prosperous time for RiverClan, and for the first two moons of her life Toadkit enjoyed the fruits of a mild and prey-rich leaf-fall. As the days continued to grow shorter, however, prey became scarce, and all three kits began to know the gnawing pang of hunger. Their mother Larktail took to giving her kits her own share of the fresh-kill when the other queens weren't looking, but despite her careful rationing, her three kits continued to grow sluggishly and do little more than huddle together for warmth. In the midst of leaf-bare, when prey was especially poor because of a cold snap that swept over the territory, both Larktail and Sandkit were afflicted with a severe case of greencough that swept through the camp. Larktail was the first to succumb to the illness, followed a few days later by Sandkit, leaving Duck-kit and Toadkit with only each other for company.
New-leaf couldn't come soon enough, nor could Toadkit's and Duck-kit's graduation to apprenticeship. Though they were still small for six moon old kits, it was hoped that the apprentice's lifestyle would help to coax the two kits out of the lethargy which they had descended into after the deaths of their mother and brother. Fernstar apprenticed the two new apprentices to young warriors whose energy she hoped would benefit them, and who could perhaps double as friends as well as mentors. The leader's wisdom in not delaying their apprenticeship soon became evident, as slowly both Toadpaw and Duckpaw began to emerge from their shells and develop friendships with the other young cats in the Clan. As newleaf progressed and the forest furled to life once more, so too did Toadpaw blossom from a quiet, withdrawn kit into a she-cat with seemingly boundless energy and curiosity. She moved into the warriors' den around the same time that leaf-fall once again began to sweep into the forest, earning the name of Toadwhisker for her determination to hunt down everything from mice and voles to solutions to even minor problems in her friends' lives.
There was one cat who took particular notice of Toadwhisker's admirable dedication to her fellow RiverClanners, having had ample opportunity to witness all of her foibles in person as the she-cat grew closer to maturity. Brownpaw was an apprentice who was named two moons after her, a tom who, like Toadwhisker and her brother, knew the struggle of growing up during a hard leaf-bare. Over the moons that they shared a den, Brownpaw had come to greatly admire her as an older apprentice and as a member of the Clan. And slowly, as both cats continued to grow slowly and Brownpaw became Brownclaw, the tom's shyness towards her began to be more than just apprenticehood idolization. Brownclaw fell hard, and did everything he could to get Toadwhisker to notice him in the same way. It didn't take long for her to be swept up in a romance with him, and, caught on the wings of new love, Toadwhisker found herself expecting his kits towards the end of that leaf-bare.
Toadwhisker wasn't sure if she was ready to be a queen yet, but Brownclaw was nothing if not dedicated to his mate, and did everything he could to please her as it came closer to her kitting date. Even though he, like her, was long of fur and preferred to stay out of the water whenever possible, Brownclaw braved the chill waters of the river in order to catch a nice fish for her during the beginning of the newleaf thaw. But the river was rougher that day than it first appeared, running swift with snowmelt, and Brownclaw did not return to camp that morning. By the evening, warriors had found his body washed up on the shore further downriver, and brought it back to camp so the Clan could grieve.
Toadwhisker was devastated. She and Brownclaw had been mated for less than two seasons, but already she couldn't imagine what she would do without him by her side. Now she was alone and expecting kits she still wasn't sure if she was ready for. Toadwhisker withdrew into herself, barely speaking or eating, to the worry of the other queens and medicine cat. Less than half a moon later, she gave birth to two small kits—a tom and a she-kit, though the occasion was bittersweet without Brownclaw at her side to help her name them. But as the wetness dried from their fur and the struggle of the birth receded, Toadwhisker realised that she could no-longer keep to herself and wallow in self-pity. She had kits to care for now, and with tensions between ThunderClan and RiverClan at an all-time high, she had to do everything in her power to protect them as they grew. Thus did Toadwhisker emerge from her lethargy once more to watch over Sorrelkit and her brother Brownkit, who was the very image of his father. She promised herself that neither kit would have to suffer the grief that she went through as a young cat. Her kits would have everything they needed in life—she would make sure of it.
